The Unravel: Documenting COVID-19 through the eyes of our students

The Unravel is a documentary series examining the lives of UNSW Students and how they have been personally impacted by COVID-19.

Through their personal stories, the series explores how six students have been affected by the crisis and the impact it has on their lives now and into the future.

From finding belonging and overcoming social isolation to reimagining their future careers, the students reflect on how they are adapting to changing circumstance and overcoming unforeseen obstacles.

Each student experience is unique, and the series gives an up-close look into how the students connect and learn from overseas during a travel ban, adapt to online learning, seek opportunities in the changing landscape of the job market and find valuable support for their mental health.

The series was created by six undergraduate students as part of their Media Arts Internship (MDIA3007) and final year Professional Experience Project. The project took place during T2 2020. It was a joint collaboration between the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Art & Design, supported by WIL Central.

Working together for the first time, the students generated and pitched the idea, constructed and filmed the interviews and edited the videos using their own resources.

The course was conducted online under the mentorship of Roxie Vuong from the PVCE Portfolio.

“I’m so proud of the students" says Roxie. "They helped each other out along the way and although some students in the group had experience creating videos before, this was the first time they had made a documentary. What began as one documentary evolved into 6 short ones!”
