Welcome to the PVCE Portfolio!

Our Pro Vice-Chancellor Education Portfolio, commonly referred to by the acronym PVCE, is UNSW Sydney’s education and student learning hub, providing University-wide support and resources to staff and student communities.

Our purpose is to provide strategic direction and services supporting educational excellence and innovation at UNSW to foster an outstanding learning experience for our students.

Our dedicated teams collaborate and partner with our UNSW staff and students, as well as through industry leaders, professional bodies and international alliances, to drive our strategic initiatives and priorities focused on exceptional education and student experience.

Our leader - Professor Christine Mathies

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education

Professor Christine (Tini) Mathies is a well-respected strategic leader, with extensive expertise in award winning curriculum design and innovation and has a strong understanding of UNSW’s teaching and learning environment. Prior to commencing as the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education, Tini was Senior Deputy Dean, Education and Student Experience at UNSW Business School. Other leadership roles during Tini’s 18-year career with the faculty included Program Director of Bachelor of Commerce, Associate Dean Undergraduate Programs. Tini is a Professor of Marketing with over 20 years of experience as a marketing researcher and educator. Her research and teaching focuses on services marketing, exploring how people and technology can create service experiences that generate value for organisations, employees and customers alike.

Educational Excellence

The Educational Excellence teams, led by Associate Professor Karin Watson, are focused on helping our students achieve the successes they deserve by supporting their academic skills, and on engaging with our Learning & Teaching community to develop the capacity of our teaching staff to deliver educational excellence.

The Student Learning team comprises staff delivering Equitable Learning and Academic Learning support, Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) and the strategic English Language Development initiative.

Academic Developement, Career Advancement and Engagement

The Academic Development and Career Advancement teams works to develop the capacity of our teaching staff to deliver educational excellence. They do this by providing academic development programs and initiatives, and overseeing Education Focussed career pathways to recognise, reward and develop academics who make a vital contribution to the delivery of outstanding outcomes for our students and the broader community.

The Educational Engagement team drives our central communications, events and promotions of the support offerings available to our Learning & Teaching community at UNSW. The team also supports shining a light on UNSW's Education externally through large-scale public events, education news and blogs, and a dedicated LinkedIn channel.

Meet Director, Education Excellence, Karin Watson

Karin is the Director, Education Excellence at UNSW Sydney, a Scientia Education Academy Fellow, and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture. She is also Director of the UNSW Education Focussed Program and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK).

Karin’s teaching expertise focuses on the student experience, particularly the role of student feedback and creating a sense of belonging in the first-year educational context. Her education leadership experience extends to building capability and community amongst peers in higher education environments through mentorship and leadership programs. Karin has worked and studied in London, Cape Town and Sydney and received several international and national awards, citations, accreditation and fellowships for teaching and education excellence.

Karin has developed Professional Development programs such as the Learning to Teach Online Project, created numerous Open Educational Resources (OER) and initiatives, and has led or project managed several competitive grants and multi-institutional projects such as OnTask.

Educational Innovation and Partnerships

The Educational Innovation teams, led by Professor Alison Beavis, drive forward technological innovations that are key to student success in our physical and digital learning environments. Drawing on data insights, AI, and best use of emerging technologies, the teams foster an innovation culture that is helping to reimagine and improve the UNSW student and staff experience.

Meet Director, Educational Innovation and Partnerships, Professor Alison Beavis

Professor Alison Beavis is Director, Educational Innovation and Partnerships

Professor Beavis holds expert knowledge in driving innovation in both education and research. She held a pioneering role as the founding Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation at University of Technology Sydney. More recently, and before joining the PVCE Portfolio, Alison was Deputy Dean of Education within UNSW's Faculty of Science.
