UNFED Meeting hosted by Science

UNSW Faculty of Science is pleased to host the October meeting of UNFED.

The October UNFED will look at how Science is approaching educational technology support. The session will look at how the faculty approaches community building with school support staff, demonstrate use cases from our hybrid technology rollout, show Science’s new studios for fast turnaround of educational videos and how Science is starting the conversation around combining pedagogy and technology with Flip Your Course.

After the presentation, the Science EdTech team will open its doors for live demonstrations of the technology discussed, where you can get hands-on and try for yourself. Our office is conveniently located just a few steps from the presentation so would be great to see you there.

Speakers

Neil Lawrence

Neil Lawrence headshot

Neil is an Educational Technology Officer in the Faculty of Science and a Technical Officer in the School of Physics. He’s made significant contributions to AV and Media facilities in Science and Physics, including introducing the Digital Teaching Hub in Physics, which academics have described as “nearly as good as overhead projectors”. He’s also consulted on improvements for CATS spaces for Hybrid Delivery and is leading a CoP for Science technical staff.

Presentation Abstract:

The Faculty of Science have been building on the foundations laid by last year's large scale EdTech role out, with centrally manged facilities and support as well as collaboration across the faculty. This presentation will follow the progress Science has made in creating a EdTech community of practise as well as hearing from three different schools on how they have uniquely overcome common EdTech problems but also how these individual schools have come together to share ideas and crowd source problem solving

Ethan OU

Ethan is an Educational Technology Officer in the Faculty of Science. He supports a variety of Moodle and media/AV projects in Science including H5P development, Moodle technical support, general video production and software integration.

Presentation Abstract:

This presentation will cover the new Recording Studios in the Science Education Team Offices. Designed for academics to record their own content, it allows for greater possibilities in educational design without a dedicated videography team. This presentation will include a demonstration of the studios and their functionalities, including two sound-isolated whiteboard studios, a podcasting room and a digital lightboard room.

Steven Parker

Steven Parker Headshot

Steven is the Education Technology Manager in the Faculty of Science with over 15 years of experience in e-learning and blended learning. He’s led major initiatives to improve Hybrid Learning across the faculty including “Flip Your Course”, a workshop series for academics to redesign courses for flipped delivery and championed the rollout of new video, audio and LMS tools to support hybrid and online learning.

Presentation Abstract:

In 2022, Science created a workshop series called Flip Your Course to address the challenge of how to combine pedagogy with technology. In this presentation, we discuss the motivation of creating Flip Your Course, how we integrated technology workshops alongside frameworks such as Mayers’ multimedia principles, Team-Based Learning and cognitive load theory, and where Science is heading with professional development for academics.
