UNFED Meeting hosted by UNSW Global

UNSW Global is pleased to host the July meeting of UNFED.

UNSW Global is pleased to host the July meeting of UNFED. This meeting will showcase two topics:

  • Labster LTI 1.3 migration in Moodle - Labster is a science education platform focused on high-quality real-world virtual simulations to help students visualize scientific concepts and practice laboratory skills in a video game-like environment.
  • Diploma in Architecture and the Diploma in Media and Communication programs - supporting students’ learning through course and assessment design:
    • incorporating metacognitive learning and gamification to design rubrics and assessment tasks
    • integrating MURAL and InVision in course design to improve the student learning experience

Topic 1 - Labster – an immersive virtual lab simulation program for developing fundamental biological practice skills

Presenters:

Dr Karen Black headshot

Dr Karen Black is a Leading Education Professional at UNSW Global and has been course convenor of the STEM Diploma Biology courses since the Diploma program’s inception in 2017. Prior to Global, Karen worked in the Vertebrate Palaeontology Lab in the School of BEES at UNSW as an ARC Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Research Assistant and ARC DECRA Fellow.

Title: Developing fundamental biological practical skills online using immersive virtual lab simulations

Diploma biology courses are equivalent to UNSW first-year biology courses and cater to international students in the life and medical sciences. Consequently, they are a key step in the development of fundamental undergraduate practical skills. With many international students remaining overseas they are faced with the challenge of learning practical skills online. This presentation will explore the use of Labster - an immersive virtual lab simulation program that maximises student engagement and supports the learning, practice and development of fundamental laboratory techniques.

Natalie Zhong Headshot

Natalie Zhong is in the TELT team of UNSW Global, managing TELT daily issues and providing technical support for related stakeholders. Natalie has a background in Information Technology and Industrial Engineering and a keen interest in educational technologies

Title: Labster LTI 1.3 migration in Moodle

Natalie will share her experience migrating Labster 1.1 to 1.3 by collaborating with UNSW PVCESE team, vendor and our academics. Labster 1.3 is the first LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) tool in UNSW Global migrating to version 1.3.

Joan Wong Headshot

Joan Wong is a Leading Education Professional at UNSW Global and is the course convenor of Biology program for Foundation Studies.

Title: Using computer simulations as pre-laboratory activities to build confidence in face-to-face laboratories.

Labster simulations were used as a substitution for face to face laboratory work during online learning throughout 2021 and 2022. This presentation will discuss how to incorporate computer simulations (Labster) as a pre-laboratory activity in assisting students with their preparation for laboratory work.

Topic 2 – Diploma in Architecture and Diploma in Media & Communication: supporting students’ learning through course and assessment design

Presenters:

Adina Stan Headshot

Adina Stan is the Education Manager of Design and Arts at UNSW Global. Adina manages the Design and Arts courses in the Foundation Studies Program and the Diploma in Architecture and the Diploma in Media and Communication. Her academic interests lie in the areas of curriculum design, assessment, interdisciplinary education, role-play simulations and problem-based learning.

Title: Overview of the Diploma in Architecture and the Diploma in Media and Communication

Adina shares the principles underpinning the curriculum design of the Diploma in Architecture and the Diploma in Media and Communication

Kyla Allison headshot

Kyla Allison is a Leading Education Professional with the Diploma of Media & Communication program. She is also a PhD Candidate at UNSW with research and teaching expertise are in the areas of Media, Affect, and Cultural Studies.

Title: Students visualising their own learning; Blooms taxonomy

This presentation will discuss reaching students from a variety of learning and educational contexts. It will draw upon theories of metacognitive learning, gamification, and Blooms Taxonomy to discuss designing approachable but nuanced rubrics and assessment tasks.

Amy Miller headshot

Amy Miller is a Leading Education Professional with the Diploma in Media & Communication program. Amy holds a Masters of Communication Management, Integrated Communications - Marketing, PR and Advertising (UTS) and a Bachelor of Education (COFA UNSW).  For over 15 years, Amy has taught thousands of first to third-year students at UTS, University of Notre Dame Australia and Macleay College in Diploma and Degree courses, teaching in the Ecology of Communication; Business Entrepreneurship; Digital Business Communications; IMC; Public Relations Strategy; Business Communication and Event Management

Title: Learning through MURAL

Amy presents an overview of the collaborative platform MURAL used in the design and delivery of the subject Media Entrepreneurship. It will cover how it is useful for student collaboration and how it benefits learning through the visual representation of ideas and incremental problem solving steps.

Luis Gito headshot

Luis Gito is a Leading Education Professional in the Diploma of Architecture program. He is an education focused academic with experience working in the ADA School of Built Environment and is currently working to build the studio courses in the Diploma of Architecture at UNSW Global. Having practiced in the industry for 5 years and completing the Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Hons Class 1. Univ Medal) – Luis’ teaching approach is informed by the limitless speculative potential of a university context while also grounded in the real world demands and expectations of the architecture industry.

Title: Streamlining Course Design and Delivery for the Student Experience

Luis explores how we can manage the comprehension of course content and student cognitive load through streamlined course architecture? (InVision, Moodle and the Advanced Grading Rubric Tool)
