ePortfolio Pedagogies: Ethical engagement and empowered student feedback

Uncovering ethical ePortfolio practices and the concept of student feedback literacy to empower students in their feedback processes.

The Scientia Education Academy are delighted to welcome Associate Professor, Christine Slade and Learning Designer, Shari Bowker from the University of Queensland.

In this lecture, Associate Professor Christine Slade will present the work of the Association of Authentic, Experiential, and Evidence-based Learning’s (AAEEBL) Task Force on Digital Ethics in ePortfolios. The Task Force focused on developing, revising, and sharing principles, strategies, scenarios, and resources to promote ethical ePortfolio practices among educators, staff, students, and platform providers. Key areas addressed include labour visibility, support systems, equitable access, data storage, and privacy.

Additionally, Shari Bowker will discuss the concept of student feedback literacy and its implications for using ePortfolios in assessment and feedback. She will present examples from The University of Queensland (UQ) that aim to support the student in developing skills related to generating internal feedback, processing feedback, and using feedback to improve their work and learning outcomes.

Overall, this lecture will explore the importance of ethical ePortfolio practices and the shift towards empowering students in their feedback processes and utilising ePortfolios for assessment and learning.

About the Speakers


Christine Slade, PhD PFHEA is an Associate Professor in Higher Education in the Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation at the University of Queensland. For the past four years, Christine has been actively involved with the Association of Authentic, Experiential and Evidence Based Learning (AAEEBL) Task Force on Digital Ethics and ePortfolios. Additionally, she is a long-standing member of the Australian ePortfolio Forum organising committee. Christine currently leads the research project titled ‘Mapping ePortfolio Practice in Tertiary Education in Australia and New Zealand’. Prior to this, she was a co-investigator in a multi-university research project focused on exploring digital ethics for students in using data from their ePortfolios. Shari Bowker is a Learning Designer in the Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation at the University of Queensland. Shari’s focus on portfolio pedagogies fosters assessment designs for student-driven learning and feedback uptake to encourage the development of reflective, self-regulated learners. She partners with colleagues within ITaLI and faculties to map out the pedagogical purposes of using ePortfolios to capture students’ educational journeys and professional identity development.
